Nikon AF-S DX 85mm F3.5 G ED Micro VR Review

General information

This is a prime lens manufactured by Nikon and the lens was released 2009.
The lens belongs to the category telephoto prime lenses, a telephoto lens where you do not have the possibility to zoom in and out.

The lens has macro-capabilities and is able to reproduce things in their true size (1:1) which is good, it tends to be the rule for calling a lens a 'true' macro lens.

Product description from Nikon

At launch 2009 Nikon wrote this regarding Nikon AF-S DX 85mm F3.5 G ED Micro VR :

"DX-format medium telephoto Micro NIKKOR lens is ideal for extreme close-up and general photography with continuous autofocus from infinity to life-size (1:1).

Compact, DX-format Micro NIKKOR Close-up Lens
An ideal choice for close-up, nature, portrait and general photography.

Nikon VR II (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization
Vibration Reduction, engineered specifically for each VR NIKKOR lens, enables handheld shooting at up to 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper still images and video capture.

Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC)
Enhances light transmission and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare.

Internal Focus (IF)
Provides fast and quiet autofocusing without changing the length of the lens, retaining subject working distance throughout the focus range.

M/A focus mode switch
Enables quick response to changing situations between manual and autofocus operation.

Close focusing to 0.9 feet
Extends versatility with focusing from infinity to life-size (1:1 reproduction ratio).

Extra-low Dispersion (ED) element
Offers superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration, even at wide aperture settings.

Exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM)
For fast, accurate and quiet autofocus.

Rounded 9-blade diaphragm
Renders more natural appearance of out-of-focus image elements."

Compatibility, autofocus and focal length

This lens is designed and meant for Nikon cameras with a smaller sensor (often referred to as 'APS-C') which means that the lens does not fit all camera models. By clicking on the link below you can make sure that the lens works with your camera model and you should do an additional check with your local dealer as well, before you buy the lens just to be sure.

The ability to use autofocus is available for all cameras.

The lens has a focal length of 85 mm. Since the lens is designed to be used on a camera with smaller sensor ('APS-C') the focal length will be equivalent to 128 mm on your Nikon camera.

Lens brightness and image stabilizer

The lens brightness and aperture value is f/3,5.

The lens is to considered fairly bright.  This will make it so much easier shooting in darker environments where you do not want or can use flash lighting, for example in churches or at different sports venues.

Inside the lens there is an image stabilizer, which helps to fend off possible movements and tremors. This is very positive and can be of great help in situations and conditions where the light is inadequate and not enough for decent shutter speeds.

Filter and Lens Hood

The lens has a traditional filter thread on the front and its measuring 52 mm which also the filter you will use must have. If you use for example an UV filter can be a cheap insurance against scratches and dust.

If you buy this lens it will come with a lens hood, whose model name is "HB-37".
